More than 100 MW of Texas Distribution-Scale Solar Project are Underway.
TEXAS NEEDS
ENERGY STORAGE
The storms triggered the worst energy infrastructure failure in Texas state history. More than 4.5 million homes and businesses were left without power, some for several days.
Texas is attractive for battery developers because of large fluctuations in the price of electricity on any given day that allow battery operators to buy low and sell high on the ERCOT market. In total, there are more than 100,000 megawatts of proposed battery projects through 2028, a 60% increase since July 2022.
TEXAS COLD KILLS BATTERIES
At its coldest point on February 15th and 16th, Texas temperatures were 40 DEGREES BELOW. Current grid battery tech does not support -40 DEGREES.

WHAT’S NEXT?
UTRGV is currently building world class battery R&D facilities with pilot line capabilities for new battery systems. The department is still guided by the work that former professor John Goodenough conducted, and whom was also a Nobel Prize winning chemist.
UTRGV has partnered with NVTX Energy for the assistance in the development of grid storage systems utilizing sodium-ion and lithium phosphate (LFP) battery technology.
